I custom-make each class to the learning needs of your child. When we start working together I will ask you about how your child likes to learn and if there are any particular considerations I need to know about. With your child we will look at what they know already, where they need support and I assess how our time together will be most effectively spent. As we discover any essential skill gaps we prioritise these because they are the building blocks for so many other topics.
Depending on age, your child is encouraged to choose the topics and content we tackle or revisit together. If your child is learning outside of a school environment I provide more content direction and structure to the flow of a set of classes. While classes remain learner led we also use your child's curiosity and interests to enhance the richness of their learning.
One of the beauties of working 1:1 is that I match the pace of each class to your child. We slow down when learning new content or revisiting content that has been forgotten and work at a more challenging pace when your child is confident to do so. I use both spaced and interleaved learning because research shows that connections are more easily made between topics and learning sticks better with repetition.
Growing confidence is key to everything your child and I do together. Learning should be just challenging enough that your child tackles content that takes them beyond their comfort zone while still allowing them to see plenty of success. Together we aim for 'I can do this!'
Refunds will not be available for missed classes. If your child is unable to attend a live class, to maintain continuity, they will receive a pack of recall resources to replace the learning we would have covered during their class. It may be possible to reschedule a missed class.
If I am unable to attend a live class then we will try to arrange an alternative class and, if this is not possible, a refund will be given.
Please be ready for a prompt start at the agreed time. Classes will finish at the agreed time. For online classes you will need to be able to access Zoom and, if your child does not join the class I will send you message on WhatsApp and wait for 15 minutes. For in person classes when collection is delayed your child will remain safe with me until you arrive . Please contact me by WhatsApp in an emergency.
Self-study classes are scheduled during school breaks. They are an opportunity for your child to recall previous learning, independently apply learning we have tackled together and develop effective study habits.
Before school breaks I provide your child a pack of recall resources to challenge them to make their learning stick in their own time. I am available to answer questions and offer additional support by email between live classes. I am also available online at specific 'drop in' times during school breaks (a bit like a homework club). During these times students may chose to join me while they work independently with the reassurance that I am there should they have any questions.
Among the benefits of your child working independently is that in live lessons we spend more time on the teaching because less time is needed on practicing and repeating content until it sticks. I have seen how establishing effective study habits can have a positive impact across all subjects. Your child will also be encouraged to reflect on the topic that they want us to tackle together in our next class.
If your child is learning outside of a school environment I offer an alternative to self-study classes.
